Your first midwife appointment

Your first midwife appointment

The booking appointment is the first meeting with the midwife and occurs early in the first trimester between 8 – 12 weeks gestation.  This appointment is an opportunity for midwives to learn about the needs of you and your family, and for you to ask questions and gain information relevant to your pregnancy. During the appointment the role of the midwife is to gain a thorough medical and psychological history to determine what care may be needed during the pregnancy.  This will include discussing any medical conditions you may have, information on family conditions that may be relevant such as diabetes, as well as lifestyle factors such as smoking, previous pregnancies, employment and the history of your physical and mental health. This appointment is also an opportunity to tell your midwife or doctor if you're in a vulnerable situation or if you need extra support. This could be because of domestic abuse or violence and sexual abuse.
